Magnesium alloys are the lightest structural metallic materials, making them ideal for the aerospace industry. With roughly one-quarter the density of steel, magnesium alloys help improve energy efficiency in modern automobile manufacturing. Along with strength and ductility, magnesium alloys offer excellent corrosion resistance.
As the lightest metal structural material for engineering applications, magnesium alloys have attracted significant interest in the automotive, aerospace, defense, electronics, and other fields due to their low density, high specific strength and stiffness, good damping characteristics, and excellent castability. In the automotive industry in particular, magnesium alloys have replaced steel, cast iron, and even aluminum alloys — magnesium is the lightest of all structural metals, with aluminum being 1.5 times heavier and steel being 4 times heavier — reducing vehicle weight and significantly contributing to fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
AZ31 magnesium alloy is the most ductile and most popular among AZ wrought alloys (Mg-Al-Zn group). Though relatively soft, this alloy offers a good combination of strength and ductility for structural applications after deformation with severe reductions.
The AZ31 alloy wrought magnesium tooling plate offers numerous benefits and special characteristics: it absorbs vibration for a longer service life while maintaining dimensional stability, delivers 4 to 5 times greater tool life, is up to 5 times more machinable than rolled aluminum, can be machined dry without oil or chemicals, is easier to handle (saving time and energy), eliminates surface machining with no stress relief required after machining, resists warping and denting, produces strong weldments (up to 95% of parent metal with minimum porosity), and is easy to clean. A wide variety of chemical treatments exist for corrosion protection, surface appearance alteration, and as a base for painting.
Magnesium is the third-most-commonly-used structural metal, following iron and aluminum. The main applications of magnesium, in order, are: as a component of aluminum alloys, in die-casting (alloyed with zinc), for removing sulfur in the production of iron and steel, and in the production of titanium via the Kroll process.

Conclusion: Passed inspection
Low density, good specific performance, good shock absorption, good electrical and thermal conductivity, and good process performance. Magnesium alloys have poor corrosion resistance, are easy to oxidize and burn, and have limited heat resistance. Their processing, corrosion, and mechanical properties offer many characteristics: fast heat dissipation, light weight, good rigidity, certain corrosion resistance and dimensional stability, impact resistance, wear resistance, good attenuation performance, and easy recycling. They also feature high thermal and electrical conductivity, are non-magnetic, and provide good shielding and non-toxic properties.
